Application of Laboratory Water Purification System in Pharmaceutical Industry

August 12, 2025

Laboratory water purifiers play a vital role in the pharmaceutical industry, and the high-purity water it prepares (e.g., purified water, water for injection, etc.) is one of the core raw materials for pharmaceutical production, testing and research and development. The following are its main application scenarios and importance:

Pharmaceutical R&D and Manufacturing

Formulation of raw materials and excipients: Pure water is used to dissolve and dilute drug ingredients, especially in sterile preparations such as injections, eye drops and I.V. The water quality needs to meet the purified water (PW) or water for injection (WFI) standards of the Chinese Pharmacopoeia (ChP) or the United States Pharmacopoeia (USP).

Equipment cleaning: Purified water is required for the cleaning of production equipment, piping and containers to avoid microbial or impurity contamination.INNOVA provide Medical Washer Disinfector.

Water for Injection (WFI): Purified water prepared through a water purifier is further distilled or multi-effect distilled to make WFI, which is used for the production of sterile preparations (e.g. vaccines, biological products).INNOVA also offers Multiple-effect Distilled Water Machine for water for injection.

Quality Control and Inspection

Laboratory analysis: high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), gas chromatography (GC), atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) and other instruments require ultrapure water (resistivity ≥ 18.2 MΩ-cm) as the mobile phase or sample preparation, to avoid impurities to interfere with the results of the experiment.

Microbiological testing: Pure water that is non-pyrogenic and sterile is required for media preparation and microbial limit checks.

Reagent preparation: e.g., buffers, standard solutions, and other experimental steps that are sensitive to water quality.

Biomedicine and R&D

Cell culture: Ultrapure water is required for cell culture medium preparation to avoid heavy metals or endotoxins affecting cell growth.

Genetic engineering and PCR: DNA/RNA extraction and PCR reaction systems require extremely high levels of nuclease and ions in the water.

Antibody and protein research: pure water is used for protein purification, electrophoresis and other critical steps.

Noble E/EU ASTM Type I &Type II / Clinical Laboratory Reagent Water (CLSI)

Laboratory water purifier through multi-stage purification technology (such as reverse osmosis, ion exchange, ultraviolet sterilization, etc.), for the pharmaceutical industry to provide different grades of pure water, to meet the diversified needs from routine experiments to high-precision analysis, is to ensure that the pharmaceutical research and development, production and quality control of key equipment.
