How to select gel imaging system?

October 30, 2023

Gel imaging system is an experimental instrument for analyzing proteins and nucleic acids, which is widely used in biology, molecular biology, genetics and other fields.

Composition of gel imaging system

1. Imager: including light source, lens, CCD/CMOS camera and other components, used to capture gel imaging images.

2. Power supply: used to provide the DC power required for gel electrophoresis.

3. Gel frame: used to maintain the shape and position of gel during electrophoresis.

4. Cooling device: used to control the temperature of gel to avoid sample inactivation and gel dissolution.

5. Computers and software: used for image processing, data analysis, and result display.

Principle

The gel imaging system is based on the principle of gel electrophoresis, which detects target molecules by separating samples in an electric field and then using dyes or radioisotope markers.

Gel imaging system uses light source to illuminate gel, and then uses lens and CCD camera to capture images.

Because different molecules have different migration speeds and sizes on gel, quantitative and quality analysis can be carried out according to their different characteristics.

Application

Gel imaging system is widely used in biology, molecular biology, genetics, clinical medicine and other fields. Here are some common applications:

· DNA sequencing: electrophoresis of PCR amplification products or restriction enzyme fragments into agarose gel, and then use dye for detection.

· Protein separation: SDS-PAGE or other gel electrophoresis techniques are used to separate and detect proteins.

· Northern and Southern blotting: Transfer RNA or DNA onto the membrane and use probes to detect target molecules.

· Immunoblotting: Transfer the protein onto the membrane and use antibodies to detect the target protein.
